Abstract

John and Mildred Whitten Wansley of Albemarle County Virginia and Elbert County Georgia and their Children documents two generations of the Wansley family, from Colonial Virginia beginning in the 1730s, through the Revolutionary Era, early Republic into the 1860s when the last of the Wansley children died.

John Wansley, Sr. was born in Hanover County, Virginia in 1738. John Wansley and his wife, Mildred Whitten, lived in Albemarle County, Virginia during the last few decades of the 18th Century. Previously, the Wansley family had lived in Louisa County, Virginia. Economically and socially the Wansleys lived modestly, in sharp contrast to members of the planter class, such as Thomas Jefferson, also from Albemarle County. During the last two decades of the 18th Century, John Wansley and his sons owned a few horses and cattle but no land. John Wansley, Sr. served three 3-month service tours during the Revolutionary War for which he received a pension in the 1830s.
Ca 1800, the John Wansley, Sr. family moved from Virginia to Elbert County, Georgia, settling on Coldwater Creek. Sarah Wansley, daughter of John Wansley, Sr., and her husband, John Beck, had arrived in Elbert County, in the 1790s. Most of the Wansley children moved to Elbert County, including John Wansley, Jr., Reuben Wansley, Thomas Wansley, Millie Wansley Jenkins and Nathan Wansley. Mildred [Millie] Whitten Wansley died in 1829. By the time of John Wansley’s death in 1835, he was relatively prosperous with an estate valued at $2000.
